Sweet Motion Activated Soap Dispenser

Bloged in General, Defies a Category by All Handhelds Monday February 4, 2008 at about 10:03 am

I’ve got nothing but love for this Motion Activated Soap Dispenser, nothing but love, man.

It’s not about avoiding germs, it’s not about the extra cleanliness of it…it’s all about the “I’ve got one of these and you don’t, so nyyyyyaaaaa…” experience. There’s no way anyone else who enters the realms of our bathroom or kitchen will have one of these cool little babies. No way.

From the Web Site:

You wash your hands to get rid of germs and bacteria, so why risk touching a soap dispenser that sits out all day being touched by dirty hands? The Sensor Dispenser is an ultra-sanitary soap dispenser that has a built-in motion detector to sense when your hands are in front of it. Just brush your hand across the motion sensor, and the Sensor Dispenser will provide you with liquid soap to get your hands squeaky clean. The Sensor Dispenser is powered by three AAA batteries (sold separately).

Sorry, guys, I’m in it for the nyyyyyaaaaa….

Ring the Alarm!

Bloged in General, Defies a Category by All Handhelds Saturday January 26, 2008 at about 10:39 am

If you, or anyone you know, is one of the many people who get all slurppy-eyed behind the wheel of a car - this should interest you. Personally, my own driving keeps me 110 percent alert and…well, frightened, so I can’t even imagine falling asleep behind the wheel. It’d be like covering yourself in Crisco and falling asleep in front of 25 hungry lions.

Apparently not everyone has similar driving skills because the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration gives us the following stats and they aren’t pretty: There are 100,000 reported crashes a year are due to drowsiness, resulting in 1,550 deaths.

Toyota has actually come up with an “Eyelid-Monitoring” system to wake up sleepy drivers. It detects heavy eyelids (the aforementioned slurpy-eyed syndrome) and then hits you with a jolt that an alarm clock would be impressed with.

While it’s better than driving while sleeping, I have to wonder what effect a sudden alarm would have on someone who’s dozing off. Would they maintain control of the wheel and car or would they jump so suddenly that they hit something or someone?

The Fugliest Tech Products in History

Okay, the title may be a little harsh - after all, they aren’t that ugly (especially the Furby). They just aren’t quite as handsome as some of the other tech-licious products. There. Now that I’ve spared their feelings, somewhat….

The monstrosity above (and the velvet gloves come off) is the Microsoft Zune Player from 2006. Touted as the “iPod Killer,” the Zune Player featured great sound and an integrated music store/manager. It didn’t have iPod’s sex appeal and it also never had a shot.

For the top 10 Ugliest Tech Products in History, click the link. Don’t snicker at the Furby though, he’s sensitive.

The Phone That Thinks It’s a Trainer

Bloged in Cell Phones, Cell Phone News, Defies a Category by All Handhelds Saturday October 6, 2007 at about 10:32 pm

According to company spokesman Noriaki Tobita, a prototype Wellness mobile phone from Japan’s NTT DoCoMo Inc. gives people a hassle-free way of keeping track of their health. It can take your pulse, check your body fat, time your jogs, assess your stress levels, tell you if you have bad breath, and even give you a pep talk. (After being told to exercise, that I’m stressed, and that I have bad breath, I’m going to need more than a pep talk, but thanks anyway.)

Kidding aside, this sounds sweet. The phone was unveiled this week at the CEATEC electronics show outside Tokyo. It has an inbuilt motion sensor that detects body movement, so it can calculate how many calories you’re burning.

The sensor can tell whether you’re walking, running, climbing stairs, or resting, and counts the calories accordingly to tally daily totals, Tobita said.

“It’s with you wherever you go, like a portable personal trainer,” he said.

From the AP (HIROKO TABUCHI, Japan):

Like Nike Inc.’s +Nike technology, the handset also keeps track of jogs, letting users set targets and keeping track of time, distance, and calories burnt — all while listening to music through headphones.

Hold the phone with outstretched arms, and it turns into a mini body fat calculator. A sensor at the top of the phone takes your pulse from your fingertip.

Worried about bad breath? Use the phone’s breathalyzer. After Tobita blew on a tiny hole on the side of the handset for about three seconds, the screen flashed, “Not too bad.”

The Wellness phone, developed by NTT DoCoMo and Mitsubishi Electric Corp., also asks questions to assesses stress levels and offers advice.

When the busy spokesman answered “Yes” to a series of questions — including “Do you feel lethargic?” and “Do you go to bed after midnight?” — a message appeared on the screen warning he was under a lot of stress.

“Don’t worry, tomorrow’s a fresh new day,” the phone then flashed. “Keep your chin up!”

NTT DoCoMo is still testing some of the phone’s other technology, including a function to keep track of meals and calculate calorific intake, as well as a networking capacity to let users share data, Tobita said.

Japan has some of the world’s most advanced cell phones, enabling users to surf the Web, check in at airports and play motion games.

DoCoMo has not set a release date or price for the Wellness phone. The Tokyo-based company’s phones are not sold overseas.

Portable Rotary Phone

Bloged in Cell Phones, Cell Phone News, Defies a Category by All Handhelds Wednesday August 29, 2007 at about 4:39 pm

I haven’t totally made up my mind yet about this one. It’s the Portable Rotary Phone from SparkFun Electronics. It’s a cellphone…I promise…come on, I wouldn’t lie to you.

It’d make a pretty cool conversation piece, I guess, and an utterly original Christmas gift for someone worth the $500 - but, ummm, can you say clunky?

The Portable Rotary Phone supports tri-band GSM, has a SIM card slot and boasts a rechargeable battery. It would be good for a few laughs and, if you’re into getting lots of attention, I can pretty much guarantee this little guy will get it for you.

The Most Amazing Gadget Ever!

Bloged in General, Gadgets, Defies a Category by All Handhelds Tuesday August 7, 2007 at about 9:59 am

by Dane Fouche

Recently I came across in my mind the most amazing gadget ever, the Fly Pentop Computer. The Fly Pentop Computer actually reads and remembers what you write, using a powerful optical scanner and a built-in computer processor. Then it uses that information to help you take notes in class, manage your schedule, play games and more. And with an emerging library of new games and activities to choose from, learning becomes endlessly engaging. Let your imagination soar with FLY.

Built-in optical sensor reads and remembers whatever you write on special FLY Paper. Internal computer figures math problems, remembers dates, records notes and much more Create music by drawing an instrument and using FLY to “play” it Growing library of FLYware games and educational software provides endless interactive fun.

This “Smart Pen” has also won numerous awards which just proves it’s worth! 2005 Toy Industry Association Awards: Toy of the Year Most Innovative Toy of the Year Award Educational Toy of the Year Award What FLY Can Teach

FLY and FLYware are designed to teach kids while entertaining them. Among the valuable skills they’ll learn are: Math Concepts (decimals, fractions and percentages, algebra, and everyday operations such as addition and subtraction) Reading & Language (exercises in listening, comprehension, vocabulary, word roots, sentence structure and writing) Science (biology, anatomy, classification of living organisms, genetics and lifecycle).

To start the main menu of the base pen, the user writes “M” and circles it. After recognizing the circled “M”, the pen switches to “menu mode.” There are several different circle-letter codes for activating different applications. For example, writing a “c” inside a circle activates calculator mode. Once an application is activated, the user uses the pen to draw on the paper to interact with the application. In the case of the calculator, the user draws the calculator on a piece of Leapfrog’s own digital paper and then interacts with the calculator. The user can then tap the individual “buttons” of the drawn calculator. The pen itself uses a spoken voice to speak out what is being tapped, and announce what the answer is. For example, after drawing the calculator, the user can tap “1″, “4″, “x”, “5″, and “=” in order. The pen’s speaker would then say “one, four, times, five, equals seventy.”

This device is one of the most practical and useful devices yet, it can be of use to both children and adults and because of it’s low cost, anyone can own one and it would be a great idea for a gift.

Philips Digital Photo Frame

Philips 7" Digital Photo Frame

Ever see something that blows you away so much that you think, “I wish I’d thought of that!” ? The Philips 7" Digital Photo Frame has that effect on me. As freakin’ if I could’ve come up with the hows and whats of the product, itself (I do well to manipulate the remote control to my dvd player - tricky little cuss), but I’d love to be able to take credit for the concept.

The Philips 7" Digital Photo Frame has enough memory to store 100 photos, meaning that even a grandparent would have enough room.

Other Features:

  • Innovative frame receives digital images from camera, memory card or PC and displays them automatically. Options to display single photos, thumbnails or slideshows.
  • 14 MB of internal memory lets you save 100 or more full-screen photos.
  • High-definition, 133ppi screen displays crisp, vibrant pictures.
  • High pixel density (720×480 resolution) provides outstanding clarity.
  • Adjustable brightness takes advantage of ambient light conditions to make each picture look its best.
  • Display can be pre-set to turn on/off automatically at the time of your choice.
  • Simple, intuitive operation means no complicated programming (They’ve heard of me and my remote control..).
  • Landscape or portrait display.
  • Includes: AC/DC adapter and USB cable.
  • Rechargeable battery 1-year manufacturer’s warranty.

Fling those old frames and photos off of your desk and into a closet - this is a much sweeter way to show off your loved ones.
