Although the term VoIP may sound like part of E.T’s vocabulary, VoIP telephone service is a popular method of internet communication.

VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) telephone service is actually a way to send voice through the internet effectively. Though many people believe that it is a rather recent technology, this type of internet communication has actually been around since 1973. However, the technology as we now know it was not introduced to mass markets until the late 1990s. Still, VoIP companies are currently larger (and more impressive) than ever before.

A VoIP connection can allow a user to complete many different tasks at one time, which can be really useful. VoIP users can send multiple telephone calls using the same broadband telephone line, and extra features (3-way calling, call forwarding, caller ID …) are all included at no extra cost when you use a line. Additional benefits include the fact that you can use your connection wherever you can use an internet connection, so you can easily move around the world without worrying about your telephone provider. Though a VoIP line is a great idea in theory, there are still many glitches that must be worked out before this type of phone communication can be considered stable.

What is the number one cause for concern when using a VoIP line? Power failure. The moment that the power goes out, your connection will be lost. Contrastingly, a regular telephone connection will still work during times of crisis. The other problem is that services can sometimes be less than clear depending upon your connection..

Should you opt for VoIP, or stick to regular land lines? Only you can decide if this new technology is right for you. Some people choose to use a it and use a cell phone when the connection cannot be counted upon - then again, how much do you value your phone? If your phone is your major source of communication with the outside world, you may not be all that comfortable with a VoIP connection .. and, you may have to be something of a computer guru as well.

Many people find it rather difficult to switch from a regular phone line to an online connection simply due to the fact that you must be internet savvy. Though you do not need to know how to navigate through a page of HTML, you may want to know how to reset a connection if it goes awry. Therefore, before you cancel your phone company subscription, weight those concerns seriously. A VoIP telephone service may be just the thing you are looking for … or it may be just the thing to drive you a bit crazy.

Apparently not everyone has similar driving skills because the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration gives us the following stats and they aren’t pretty: There are 100,000 reported crashes a year are due to drowsiness, resulting in 1,550 deaths.

Toyota has actually come up with an “Eyelid-Monitoring” system to wake up sleepy drivers. It detects heavy eyelids (the aforementioned slurpy-eyed syndrome) and then hits you with a jolt that an alarm clock would be impressed with.

While it’s better than driving while sleeping, I have to wonder what effect a sudden alarm would have on someone who’s dozing off. Would they maintain control of the wheel and car or would they jump so suddenly that they hit something or someone?

One of my favorite things to blog about is great web sites. As a web publisher, I spend a great deal of time online. A great, great, great deal…. Oh, let’s be honest, sometimes I walk out the back door of my home and am overwhelmed by life’s graphics - all the non-pixelating blues and greens. Pretty. And eveything’s so big - like the biggest monitor on the planet. It’s a lot to process, so I hustle back to my computer.

From this vantage point, I love a great web site. It’s, I assume, like finding a new neighborhood to ride your bike through or finding a new mall to hang out in.

I recently came across just such a site: Test Freaks.com. This is an amazingly well done web site with a usefulness factor that’s through the proverbial roof. Test Freaks tests a variety of products and provides the following for each:

• The Test Freak Rank - on a scale of 1-10. For example, the Nikon D300 Digital Camera earned an 8.
• Expert Reviews - the Nikon D300 Digital Camera, for example, has 23 expert reviews available on the site. Each product has a variety of reviews done by experts for you to sort through. These experts are people from the media or connected, in some way, to the product being reviewed. Basically, people who have done their homework so you can use their cheat sheets!

Are the days of the iPod coming to an end. While I personally would say hell to the no, a professor at the University of Alabama rolls with this tide: that the iPhone will eventually replace the iPod.

Michael Hardin, associate dean of research at UA’s Culverhouse College of Commerce says, “I predict the iPhone will eventually replace the iPod,” Hardin says. “No one wants to carry around a pocket full of devices, so having your phone, calendar, music and video player in one device will be appealing.”
