Pogue Lays it on the Line for Amazon

Bloged in iPods by All Handhelds Sunday February 26, 2006 at about 10:38 am

While you have to applaud Amazon for thinking big, fat, amazonian thoughts, they may be….well…out of their collective minds. At any rate, I’m pulling for them - - - I’m just not placing any bets just yet.

Read a recent post by David Pogue and you’ll see what I mean. All in all, he breaks it to them pretty gently.

Laptop Lap Desk

Bloged in Wireless, Laptop Computers by All Handhelds Saturday February 25, 2006 at about 8:46 am

I may not have decided on which laptop I want to buy (though it’s down to 4 now!), but I’ve found its pedastal. The Laptop Lap Desk (SP001) from Sharper Image appears to be just what I’m looking for when I f-i-n-a-l-l-y bring a laptop home.

It’ll be perfect for times I’m away from my desk or the comfort of my favorite table at my favorite coffee house.

Features:

  • Lightweight - designed for comfort and stability.
  • Rubberized underside keeps the desk from slipping off of your lap.
  • Dual risers elevate your laptop so your computer’s cooling fans work to keep the computer — and your lap — from getting too warm.
  • Features a convenient built-in handle and it’s sized to fit most laptop carry cases.

Easy enough. If only everything was this cut and dry!

Toshiba Satellite A100 on Sale

Toshiba is having a monster of a sale on the Satellite A100 on Sale, while sales last. Here’s the link, you might want to check this out! >>>>> Toshiba - Just $599

Seems like a deal to me…though in all honesty, I’m not as familiar with Toshiba as I could be. At that price, maybe it’s time to get familiar.

Top Ten Laptops

 Acer TravelMate 8200

The Acer TravelMate 8200 is one of the lap tops featured in Cnet’s Product Review of the top 10 laptops.

I’m hanging on their every word since I’m very much in the market for one! Three of the ones I’ve been trying to choose between all made the list: The Lenovo ThinkPad Z60t, the Sony VAIO VGN-TX670P, and the Apple PowerBook G4.

I had considered the Dell XPS M170 but this review changed my mind… ours would be used primarily for office work, so we can (THANKFULLY) look for a less expensive laptop.

It’s a great review and actually pointed out things I’d never thought of - in the long run that alone will probably save me $$$ which is always, always, always a good thing.

Vizrea has introduced a mobile phone application called Vizrea Snap that lets you automatically transmit photos wirelessly (by the phone network or Bluetooth) and organize them on a website. It’s available as a beta and it works with certain Panasonic and Nokia phones.

Check it all the way out at http://vizrea.com/.

This cutie patootie musical pooch “feeds” on your favorite tunes and changes moods with the music you play. He isn’t picky about the music he listens to - he’ll do the boot scoot boogie or rock it all the way out. Your choice.

Features:

  • Works with most MP3 players and stereos
  • Built-in speaker broadcasts tunes
  • Rocks to music by moving its head and ears
  • Moods change with type and amount of music it hears
  • Headphone jack for private music enjoyment
  • Flashing LED lights change with the type of music played
  • Dual connector cable included
  • Pocket sized for easy portability
  • Underwriters Laboratories (UL) approved. (UL is the worldwide trusted source for product compliance)
  • 1-year manufacturer’s warranty

The reviews for this guy are a manufacturer’s dream. The human entertainment is obviously soaring, but personally - we have a cat, “Bo,” who I’d love to run it by. I think he’d love it muchly.

The Ever-Changing World of Technology

Bloged in General by All Handhelds Sunday February 12, 2006 at about 6:48 pm

I saw a little bity girl yesterday who couldn’t have been more than five years old. She had on a Sponge Bob sweater and tiny little jeans, wore her dark hair in pig tails, and carried a purse in one hand and an mp3 player in the other. Hello, 2006!

A few things ran through my mind. First of all, I wondered what music a 5 year old would listen to. Trace Adkins? Kanye? Green Day? I somehow doubt that “Little Bunny Foo Foo” was hopping through the files.

I also couldn’t help wondering what all this little girl would witness in the world of technology in her lifetime. Absolutely, positively amazing if you think about it.

Think of all the things that the proverbial they have come up with since you were five. Can you even imagine what lies ahead of this little gal?

Like I said - absolutely, positively amazing.

Cell Phone Users in UK Going Crazy

The growing popularity of ring tones has marked a significant rise in the mobile downloads. The sales in mobile downloads is probably going to reach 760 million this year, from just 30 million in 2002. For young and fashion conscious people, ring tones are a craze. Some consider it annoying and irritating. But it cannot be denied that ring tones have become exceptionally hit contributing to the growing Britain’s mobile phone download market. Users are encouraged to spend too much on mobile accessories like ring tones, music, games and other content. It is likely that they would spend a total of £740m ($1.3bn) downloading mobile content to their phones this year. It means that there would be more than 18-fold increase on the £40m spent on downloads just three years ago. Undoubtedly, the ring tone industry is growing at an exciting pace. The easy to download nature of ring tones is further driving young people to personalize their phones with ring tones. The latest generation 3G mobile phones are giving more fuel to users to download superior quality ring tones to their phones. This new technology has increased the capacity and quality of ring tones. The owner of ring tones, Jamster is at the top of UK’s mobile download industry, the cause being the roaring success of ring tones. The Crazy Frog was the first to make it to the top of the music charts with a version of Axel F, in May this year. It is just the beginning of this rapidly expanding sector and people have just started to recognize its potential. Ring tones for mobile phones may soon be the most profitable segment of the industry. On the other side, users are also complaining of the junk mobile texts charging them high rates after they sign up for ring tones. Jamster gives explanation by saying its range of services are growing. Compared to ring tones with 33% sales, games account only with 26% of sales.Ringtones report the largest share of the UK download market. Rest of the market has mobile phone screensavers (13%), gambling (9%), music (8%) and other content - from stocks and shares to pornography (11%). According to the reports, by 2010, the industry could be worth £24.6bn globally.

Top mobile phone networks Vodafone, Orange and 3 network are increasing their amount of content to download.

The Vodafone is currently having 3.2 million users. 3 network is also moving with force offering pop music and video downloads.

But still 40% percentage of users think this is waste of money while some say they are not aware of the procedure to download the mobile content. So the challenge is to draw the attention of older people towards the downloading mobile content. This can be done by providing content of their interests.
