Buying an mp3 player

Bloged in Mp3 by All Handhelds Monday July 25, 2005 at about 12:02 pm

by Paul K Davies

It seems everyone has one these days, walking the dog, traveling work, at the gym, the idea of carrying your entire music library with you everywhere you go is appealing to most of us, but what is this mp3 thing anyway?

What is mp3?

MP3, an abbreviation for Moving Picture Experts Group layer III, is a technology that allows audio data to fit into a much smaller space than it was originally, with little or no loss of audio quality. Usually raw audio data is very large and unmanageable and is especially difficult to deal with on portable devices due to the lack of storage available (your standard audio CD fits at most 80 minutes of raw audio data on it), but mp3 allows the storage of about 10 times the raw audio data into memory of the same size (that’s over 800 minutes onto the same 80 minute audio CD).

So what’s WMA?

WMA files are Microsoft’s equivalent of mp3 files, they offer slightly better compression (more music for your MB) and some additional built in copy-write protection for those over cautious record labels out there.

More and more mp3 players support WMA files these days so it’s worth looking out for as there is a growing amount of music available for download on the Internet in WMA format.

Got Me A New Cellphone

Bloged in Cell Phones by All Handhelds Thursday July 21, 2005 at about 11:17 pm

I got a new Motorola V551. VGA camera, built in Bluetooth, MP3 ringtone capable, hands-free speaker. Wow, it’s got game. How long will it take me to figure out all this. Years.

It holds about 1000 contacts, which is good, because I have hundreds of customers, who have several numbers each.

Because the V551 is Bluetooth enabled, wireless headsets can be configured with the phone for total handsfree operation. It supports Cingular’s “Fast Forward” call forwarding device, which enables you to easily forward your wireless calls to your land-line phone.

The V551 is a wireless internet and messaging badboy. It has built in support for sending and receiving pictures, text, graphics, sound and video via messages. There’s also a built-in web browser for MEdia downloads and mobile web browsing. Cingular’s MEdia service lets you receive and send emails, read news headlines, get weather updates, download games and ringtones, and more. iTap text entry, which is a technology that makes it easier for people to enter words and text on handsets, is built into the unit– a plus for mobile email and text messaging users.

It has a multitude of software tools, including a voice memo recorder, a calculator, a calendar and an alarm clock. I have mine wake me up by saying, ” Hello Moto. ” You can use the V551’s Bluetooth capability to set up a wireless link with a Bluetooth accessory or connect to a computer or hand-held device to exchange and synchronize data.

The V551 shines in the ” Hey y’all, look at this ! ” department. The phone’s VGA camera can capture stills and clips with up to 15 seconds of video, either of which can be sent to your friends via MMS messaging or email, or to your PC via USB or Bluetooth.

It weighs 4.23 ounces and measures 3.5 x 1.93 x .97 inches. Its lithium-ion battery is rated at up to 3.75 hours of digital talk time, and up to 225 hours of digital standby time. It comes with a one year limited warranty.

Nearing the End of Clunky Cellphones?

Bloged in Cell Phones by All Handhelds Wednesday July 20, 2005 at about 8:47 am

While loving all things handheld, the nearest and dearest to my heart is the cellphone. Simply put, I’d be so lost without mine, Judas would have to find me.

My one and only gripe about my cellphone is its cumbersome build. It makes it hard to go walking, jogging tennis-ing (sorry vocabulary heads). I’ve always wished the cellphone, in general, would get in shape and trim down. Apparently I’ve been pretty good, there are people out there trying to grant my wish.

The companies are falling all over themselves trying to build me the perfect phone - which means one that’s more portable and fits EASILY in my pocket while I do what I do. Most of these lack the picture-taking wonders, Bluetooth, etc - but ‘taint no thing for me. However, a few do have the extra features most people crave. Go to the company websites online or their showrooms offline. Shop around and find the perfect one for you. I’ve got my eye on the Nokia 7280. It speaks to me.

Here are a few of the most streamlined little lovelies - the waifs, as it were, because curves are ridiculous on a phone:

T-Mobile - Samsung SGH-E105 Makes calls, surfs the wireless Web, and sends messages. Some people have complained of a fairly low volume, but I can’t say firsthad - I’ve never had the pleasure of meeting this one.

Cingular - Samsung SGH-P207 This stylish phone is IMO where the cellphone is headed. It can take pictures, surf the web, dictate text messages, and take calls all while fitting nicely in a pocket….that’s what I’m talking about! Extras include Car charger; wired headset; leather case; charging cradle; holster; data kit.

Sprint - LG VI-125 This one is for users who just want to make and receive phone calls. Nothing less, and definitely nothing more.

Nokia - Nokia 7280 (The hottie pictured above.) Features include Bluetooth and speakerphone; VGA camera and FM radio, strong call quality; world phone.

10 Steps to Buying a Digital Camera

Bloged in Digital Cameras by All Handhelds Sunday July 17, 2005 at about 8:46 am

by John Howard

You are anxious to purchase your new digital camera! You want to get it in your hands quickly so you can begin to enjoy it. Are you going to go to the store right now and pick one out? Wrong! You must have some basic knowledge and know-how prior to entering into the world of salesmen and digital cameras! Here are the steps to buying the digital camera that is right for you.

1. Know your budget. Yes, you have to do the number crunching this time. No sense in getting your hopes up for a high powered digital camera you can’t afford. Do not be afraid to tell the salesman straight away what your budget is either. Don’t waste your time looking for cameras that don’t fit this budget.

Growing Trends in the Mobile Phone Industry

Bloged in Cell Phones by All Handhelds Monday July 11, 2005 at about 1:33 pm

BY: Jo Wintour

The ever-changing mobile communications industry is again
transforming consumer perception of telephony on-the-move. We’ve
come a long way since the 80’s “brick like” model that gave us
the freedom to move away from dingy payphones. In fact, mobile
phones today serve a completely new purpose. No longer is it
solely about the need to contact a friend, colleague or family
member at any time or place. What reaches out to the majority of
consumers today is the uniqueness of a handset; as mobile
technology becomes fashion accessory. Constant advancements in
technologies ensure we’re spoilt for choice, with the capacity
to personalise almost every aspect of a mobile phone.

Consumers have been groomed to demand an increasingly high
standard of functionality in their mobile phones. The good news
for mobile phone suppliers is that this ensures handset
replacement is rapid, as research and development evolves the
phone into a personal organiser, music player, camera and mobile
entertainment centre. We want to enjoy games, video clips and
music from our phones and the mobile music industry in
particular is going from strength to strength. As a result
mobile phone giants, such as Sony Ericsson, are exploiting
demand with the imminent release of the W800i, an advanced flashing lights
http://fireflymobile.com.

If this was not enough, many consumers go to extensive lengths
to find the most up-to-date ringtones and screensavers.
Consequently, a myriad of websites now exist specifically to
cater for this growing market. Examples include 1st Choice
Ringtones
(http://www.1st-choice-ringtones.co.uk) and Mobile Ringtonez
http://www.mobileringtonez.com.”; Modern consumers are no longer
satisfied with the traditional “ring ring”. Downloadable tones
can range from classical music to the latest chart toppers. The
public have generally responded positively to such a vast
selection, with the exception of the “crazy frog” which is the
first ringtone to make it into the UK singles chart (and receive
several hundred complaints) due to a very aggressive television
advertising campaign. The kids apparently love it, but not
everyone is happy!

The mobile phone industry is certain to continue evolving, with
some research suggesting that one day phones will take the place
of credit cards and the remote control. The innovation and level
of competition in the mobile music and mobile phone markets can
only mean greater choice and lower competitive prices, so sit
back and look forward to the exciting surprises the key players
in this industry have to offer us!
